E-co lab has assisted architect Nabih Tahan in the energy calculation and design of his retrofit Passive House project in Berkeley, and we will be co-presenting that project.

The Fairview House is featured in the May, 2007 issue of Energy Design Update, a monthly newsletter on energy-efficient housing, from Aspen Publishers. The Smith House was also featured in a previous Energy Design Update from May, 2004.

Katrin was also recently interviewed for an article on Passive House in the latest issue of “New Scientist” (744kb).

e-co lab Presents at 11th annual International Passive House Conference

Held in beautiful Bregenz, Austria, this year's conference was fully booked with 900 participants a month before the event, a record attendance. Those present were treated to an array of fascinating passive house presentations, including three from the e-co lab staff:
"Passive House Under Construction in California," "Warm Climate Building Strategies", and "Lessons Learned from the Builder's Perspective."
The conference also featured a Sunday field trip to some of the many passive house projects in the region. Stops on a great tour of northern Vorarlberg (the westernmost province in Austria) included a school, a factory, a community center, apartments, and a single-family dwelling. Vorarlberg, one of seven Austrian provinces, has also recently passed a law stipulating that all new construction funded by state money is to be built to passive house standard. Wow!

e-co lab participates in AFH-IA BIGe event at Iowa State University

e-co lab Executive Director Katrin Klingenberg will participate in tonight’s panel discussion on sustainable energy issues via video-conference, organized by Architecture for Humanity Iowa at Iowa State University’s College of Design. Other panelists and speakers include Cameron Sinclair (Co-Founder of Architecture for Humanity [AFH]), Pliny Fisk III (Co-Director of the Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems), Maureen Ness (Architect with LHB, Project Leader AFH-MN, AIA, LEED AP), Kevin Nordmeyer (Architect with RDG, AIA, LEED AP), and Clare Cardinal-Pett (Associate Professor, Iowa State University, Department of Architecture).

Katrin Klingenberg gives e-co lab Lecture in Iowa

Katrin Klingenberg, Executive Director of the Ecological Construction Laboratory will give a lecture at 5:00pm in Kocimski Auditorium, College of Design, at Iowa State University about Climate Change and Passive Housing. Klingenberg has built several passive houses in the Midwest, and is currently developing a strategy to bring passive-housing technology to low-income clients in the United States.
